RO-RO hull forms have been developed to take more vehicles and provide efficient cargo handling, but they do have drawbacks.
Two Swedish naval architects — Yrban Sjoholm and Arne Kjellberg of Kockums — said that the wide aftbody gives stability loss in waves. The main reason for this shape is the large stern ramp or ramps.
The special hull form, centre of buoyancy and stern form cause most ro-ro ships to be course unstable, which it would be wise to try to improve in future designs, and for captains to avoid large heeling angles under high-speed manoeuvres at full draughts, they said.
