THROUGHOUT THE centuries, the Middle East served as a focus of international trade. Daniel Morgenstern, from the Israeli Ministry of Transport, in a paper "Israel landbridge v Suez Canal" said that his country could become a real bridge but this needs port development in Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Egypt plus better roads and railways. This, along with widening of the Suez Canal, he said, may perhaps return the area to important transport status it had in the Ancient World.
