New engines soon from Gardner

AT LAST week's Institute of Road Transport Engineers' exhibition the major exhibit from L. Gardner and Sons was its now well established 8LXCT, but most of the engineers who visited the Gardner stand were more keen to hear about the three new engines from the Hawker Siddeley subsidiary that are expected to be unveiled later this year.

The 5LXCT is a five-cylinder version of the 6LXCT and its maximum power rating will be in the 127-142kW (170-190hp) band. More extensive modifications have been made to the 10.45 litre turbocharged 6LXCT to produce the 6LXDT. The model has a larger bore and longer stroke and will be available in three power ratings up to 201kW (270hp). Maximum torque is a very generous 1,125Nm (830Ibft).

For power ratings above 300hp Gardner will have available its all new LYT later this year. Initially the 15.5-litre turbocharged Gardner will be rated at 239kW (320hp) at 1,800rpm but the engine is intended to go up to 420hp with charge-cooling.
