AT THE closing session of the IRU Congress yesterday resolutions were adopted recommending the constant improvement in professional competence of operators and companies.

The adaptation of equipment to meet the needs of customers; increased vehicle productivity and high quality of service for its customers were urged.

It recommended that governments shopld avoid subsidies which distorted competition and freedom of choice and asked for equal treatment for privately -and publicly owned undertakings.

The congress called on governments to examine the possibility of increasing speed limits, axle and gross vehicle weights by taking into account the technical progress which had been made, and it urged an examination of the reduction and standardisation of frontier formalities.

The congress also passed a resolution deploring the treatment of drivers involved in accidents in foreign countries, especially arbitrary sentences of imprisonment.

It pointed out that more than 60 million people are directly employed in road transport worldwide and called on responsible authorities to press for increased and improved training facilities.

Referring to energy conservation, the congress pointed out that road transport is responsible for a relatively small proportion of fuel consumption and that the diesel engine offers unquestionable advantages in terms of energy and the environment compared with other fuels.

Congress urged That action taken against energy waste and environmental damage should take into account the overall quality of life.
