I WAS interested to read in Readers Write, April 28, the disclaimer by HWP stating that March 31 was not the date of the first tri-axle in use and stating that their tri-axle tanker was the first completed at the end of October, 1966.
In fact, our first Northern Autosteer tri-axle running gear, which as the name suggests is automatically steered on the rear axle, was exhibited at Earls Court in September, 1966, and immediately after the show the tanker built by Ramsden of Darlington was mounted on to this and was in service as the first tri-axle tanker in use for heavy oil, operated by Kelman of Turriff. The photograph shows the vehicle in operation.
The running gear consists of two 20,000 lb. Rubery Owen axles and one Ceschi 20,000 lb. axle fitted with bearings, hubs and brake drums by Rubery Owen giving complete interchangeability of spares. We are the sole distributors in Great Britain for Ceschi and this running gear is available from our current production.
