A PUBLIC inquiry has been held into Newcastle on Tyne Corporation plans to restrict loading and unloading in the city centre during peak hours.

Main opponent of the scheme is the Northern division of the Traders Road Transport Association. It was stated that 350 firms would be affected by the restrictions which would be in force between 8 am. and 9.15 am. and 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. On behalf of the traders, it was stated that the plan would make it difficult for traders to take, or make, last minute deliveries or to load up in readiness for the following day. The morning ban would cause staffing problems.

It was also contended that an artificial peak period of traffic would arise immediately the restricted period was over. The Corporation said that the whole idea was to try and keep peak-hour traffic moving.

DEFECTIVE

TRANSPORT Ministry spot checks at Luton revealed that four out of five commercial vehicles stopped had defects of some sort. A Luton police spokesman commented: "This is a very high proportion. Some vehicles were in such a bad condition that they were not allowed to continue their journeys."
