haulage very seriously. However, once a week our quirky correspondent, the Hawk, steps off his perch to take a humorous look at the industry to keep us all sane. If you have any off-beat yarns that illustrate the stranger, or sillier, side of the business, he'd like to hear from you. As a softhearted old bird, he's also happy to publicise charitable works— and is always interested in events for the vintage vehicles he drove as a fledgling. Drop the Hawk a line at Commercial Motor, Bird's Eye View, Rm H203, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5AS, or fax him on 0181652 8969.

Books for truckies

0 here were two books waiting in The Hawk's in-tray this week. So tucking them under his arm, with Foclen the dog by his side, he set off in the direction of the Pig and Calculator to give them his undivided attention. Securicor: The People Business, by Sarah Underwood, traces the development of the company from its humble beginningsin 1935 as Night Watch Services—a surveillance force for private residences—to its global position in the market in security, transport and communications. If you want to read a book praising Securicor to the skies, this is the one for you. Underwood writes in glowing terms, comparing the company philosophy to that of the Roman Dionysius and the seventeenth century English philosopher Francis Bacon. The Hawk found one little nugget shining through the polish: the diary of George Woodberry, one-time operations director of Securicor International. George delivers a nail-biting account of his escape through the desert when Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1 990. 218.99 available From Catherine Meyrick at CPL Books, phone 1865 798623.
