• Cornish hauliers in the pressure group WASTE (Working And Saving The Environment) have persuaded North Cornwall Council to halve a planned 40% increase in tipping rates at waste transfer stations in the county.

The 20% increase comes into effect in June, but WASTE spokesman Bill McKay says this is still too much. However, the council has agreed to delay closure of its St Erth waste transfer station until September — WASTE claims the closure would double journey lengths for some hauliers. From 1 April carriers of waste will have to be registered by law, but the council says there will be delays in sending registration certificates.

It has written to hauliers asking them to use the letter as proof of application for registration — however the letters do not contain hauliers' names and WASTE is worried that they can be copied by unscrupulous operators. "It's another example of the council's ineptitude," says McKay.
