THE Government hopes to introduce a Bill that will enable the Department of the Environment to carry out experiments in rural transport.
The Bill will contain clauses relaxing some licensing regulations, but much of the testing will be done under existing laws.
A committee, probably headed by a Minister, will oversee the trials which are to be done in two areas in England, one in Wales and one in Scotland.
There will also be working groups whose members will have wide interests. County councils are competing to be included in the test areas, but they will not be selected until the meeting of the steering committee which is expected soon.
It is hoped that the experiments will run for two years I in each case. The committee will be looking at the possibilities of lift schemes using private cars, minibuses, the use of school buses for fare-paying passengers and postal buses,
