SALES of commercial vehicles dropped by 17.7 per cent in February compared with the same month last year—and the foreign vehicles' share of the market increased to 12.15 per cent.
Sales of each of the manufacturers went down, but Ford and British Leyland increased their share of the market to 33 per cent and 30 per cent respectively with Bedford falling to 18.3 per cent of the market and Chrysler to 3.66 per cent.
Volkswagen headed the importers' figures with a total of 422 vehicles imported in the up to 3.5-ton class and Chrysler (France) came in second with 254—all car-derived vans.
But sales of vehicles in the up to 3.5 tons class were down generally by 23.5 per cent with the British share of the market falling by 24 per cent and the importers falling by 19 per cent.
Over 3.5 tons the market fell by 18 per cent and the British share was down by 20 per cent while the importers' share fell by only 5 per cent.
