• Maj-Gen Sir John Potter, the Yorkshire LA, adjourned a hearing under Section 69 of the Transport Act 1968 in Leeds last week, after Mr L. R. Stevenson, the managing director of the company concerned Leonard R. Stevenson Ltd, of Shipley, had told him: "I don't know why I am here." Mr Stevenson had then gone on to say that he had been informed by a member of his staff that a representative of the company was expected to attend the inquiry in connection with a Commer van which was found to be in an unroadworthy condition.

Asked by the LA if he had read the letter which had been sent to the company regarding the inquiry, Mr Stevenson replied that he had not.

The company which holds an 0 licence authorizing four vehicles, of which two are specified, had been called before the LA following a maintenance and fleet inspection on January 18, in which one vehicle was issued with an immediate GV9.

Adjourning the hearing the LA said: "As managing director of this company I would expect you to have read this letter and be fully aware as to why you are here. When the case is relisted for hearing I hope you will be more conversant."
