SBG reduces double-deck fleet

by Derek Moses • A feature of the £2m 1971 rolling stock programme now finalized by the Scottish Bus Group is a reduction in the proportion of doubledeckers ordered. A total of 44, all Darniler Fleetlines, is to be split between Alexander (Fife), Alexander (Midland), and Western SMT. Of these, 10 will have Northern Counties bodies and the remainder Alexander bodies. Last year's intake of double-deckers was 110.
Most numerous among the single-deckers ordered is the Leyland Leopard (116 models), while 21 12-metre Bristol REMH chassis with 42-seat Alexander coach bodies for the Anglo-Scottish services have been included. The overall total is down slightly from the 1970 programme, standing at 235 (275).
It is interesting to note that the SBG has not ordered any Bristol VRT double-deckers for the second year running, although the Group pioneered this model in 1969 when 84 VRTs were purchased.
