and new name

• The next president of the Institute of Transport will be Mr D. E. A. Pettit, chairman of the National Freight Corporation, and until recently chairman of SPD LtFl. He will take office on October 1 and deliver his presidential address on October 11.

News of the election was given on Friday night by the current president, Mr J. R. Stainton, of BOAC, at the Institute's annual dinner in London. Also revealed by Mr Stainton was the new name for the IoT, following Privy Council approval of its fully chartered status. It becomes the Chartered Institute of Transport, and inembers are now able to assume the chartered title. For instance, a Member (MInstT) becomes FCIT—Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport. Dan Pettit became a full member of the IoT in 1965, a member of council in 1967 and a vice-president last year. His involvement in transport dates from 1954 when he became SPD's personnel manager; he progressed to become chairman of the company by 1961.

He is a fellow of the British Institute of Management, and a council member of the Institute of Food Distribution, among other activities.
