Exhibit :—Two Water-ballast Rollers.

The water-ballast motor roller, which was introduced by Messrs. Barford and Perkins, of the Queen Street Works, Peterborough, has now thoroughly established a reputation for efficiency and economy among owners of country estates, and those responsible for the upkeep of our large parks and racecourses.

There are two exhibits on Barford and Perkins' stand, and one of these is equipped with a two-cylinder engine which gives out about i4h.p. at r,000r.p.m. It is fitted With a " B.W." carburetter, which, although requiring .a supply of petrol for starting purposes, will afterwards permit of the consumption of ordinary paraffin in the cylinders. The engine is provided with a dual system of 'ignition : the low-tension, Bosch magneto is employed for all ordinary 'running ; and a coil and accumulator is reserved for the purpose of starting, or for emergency use. This roller -weighs about six • tons. with .its full load of . balLast, and it is a .very. suitable machine for the making and repairing of estate roads, or similar work, Whilst it can also be employed as a portable power plant, and can then be put to drive stone-breaking machines or any other kind of farm or estate implements. The main roller is four feet wide and three feet in diameter. This cylinder may be made inter-changeable with a lighter one, the use of which renders the machine suitable for rolling .on turf.

has been supplied for use on golf links, racecourses, and cricket grounds.

Mr. Arthur J. Cox, of Glentnarkie, Alyth, Scotland, who purchased one of the heavier rollers some time back, wrote to the makers on the 1th January, 1907, in the following terms : " I have much pleasure in stating that the motor roller you supplied to me has given much satisfaction. It does the work very well indeed, and any handy man can work it. I have three miles of private road to keep in repair, and it serves my purpose admirably. It also works a stone breaker, which you supplied to me, very well indeed. I consider the petrol consumption very low, and can gladly recommend your motor roller and breaker for estate work generally." The opinions of users are always valuable to prospective par
