concrete company and I would like to become a transport manager. Is it possible for me to obtain a transport. manager's certificate by means of a correspondence course? Would this particular certificate be recognized by employers?
AThere is at present no statutory Transport
Manager's Licence. It is probable that such a licence, or a graded series of licences, will be introduced—perhaps in about 18 months time—but until the syllabus is agreed the many educational bodies now providing courses can only surmise what the ultimate requirements will be.
The Transport Tutorial Association, c/o The Institute of Transport, 80 Portland Place, London W1. provides correspondence courses in transport subjects. Many Colleges of Further Education offer part-time or evening courses, and you would probably find it easier to get through an examination if you could be helped by college lecturers with written work during the course.
The other problem, if you obtain a qualification, will be to get a job as a transport manager. Your driving experience will be useful as a background but we would think you would be well advised to consider any opportunity of a job in a transport office—clerical, accounts, claims, etc—in your locality. Experience of office and staff administration, in addition to a formal qualification, is likely to be sought by employers.
