• A bus operator admitted last week that his company had not anticipated a threat to weekend services when it drew up a five-day working week agreement with the unions. But he promised a revision of the operations of Western SMT after there had been a complete breakdown of Sunday services in Greenock.
The buses failed to turn out when crews, employed on a voluntary basis on Saturdays and Sundays, did not arrive for work. And the situation in Greenock revealed that other bus depots throughout Scotland could also be affected the same way.
