Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A full-scale traffic experiment to test the valueof exclusive bus lanes and other methods of giving priority to buses at signalcontrolled intersections was conducted on the Road Research Laboratory's research track earlier this month. Forty buses and drivers from London Transport together with 170 motorists took part.

Controlled experiments of this nature are supplementary to the number of demonstration projects mounted in different parts of the country. In this latest example many test conditions were tried out on approaches to a signal-controlled intersection.

The conditions studied were: Reserved lane for buses on nearside (as illustrated) which terminated at various distances up to 100m from the stop line; and bus bays. In some tests, a bus stop was sited in a bay at various distances from the stop line and the effect of giving buses priority when leaving the bay was measured.
