A MEETING TO discuss the construction of a controversial freight distribution depot deep in the Suffolk countryside has revealed widespread opposition to the plans.
The consortium of developers behind Stowmarket Multi Modal Distribution Park (SMMDP) has submitted an application for 120,000m1 of warehouse space near Creeting St Peter to be used as a freight hub. Agent Bidwells says that if it gets the green light 1,800 truck journeys will be diverted from Felixstowe port to the depot.
The plans were resurrected after stalling four years ago over environmental concerns, However, a recommendation was put forward at a meeting on 18 July to refuse the application after a vote involving 94 members of the public and local town councillors.
Emily Metcalfe. deputy town clerk for StowmarketTown Council, says: "1 think the district council has extended the consultation period until the end of the month. There are so many people who want to consult on it.
More than 1,300 residents and representatives have commented on the proposals since the application was received from SMMDP on 18 May.
Bidwells refuses to comment further until a decision has been made.
