Rising numbers of goods vehicles

are crossing to mainland Europe b but fewer of them are registered Laura in the UK. Dylan Gray reports. 186.83 First-quarter results show that goods vehicle traffic travelling to mainland Europe has increased by 2.5% though the number of UK-registered vehicles fell by 1.2%.

In 01/2006525,800 UK-registered trucks headed to the Continent; in 01/2007 that figure was down to 519,500.The biggest increase in traffic came from foreign-registered vehicles— a 2.3% increase to 1.5 million journeys. Unaccompanied trailers rose by 5.1% to 799,600.

French trucks made up the majority of foreign vehicles with 363,400 coming over in 01/2007, followed by the Netherlands (261,400) and Germany (190,100).

No wonder Dover Port is planning a new western port. Just over 1.8 million goods vehicles travelled through Dover,Folkestone,Ramsgate and the Channel Tunnel in 01/2007; about twice the traffic crossing the North Sea (figures are taken from all ports on the East Coast, north of and including the Thames estuary). The English Channel ports on the South Coast to the west of Folkestone handled 140,000 goods vehicles in Q1/2007. •
