PERMITTING A DRIVER to operate a 7.5-tonne vehicle without the necessary driving licence has cost Luton-based MS Foods 11,750 in fines and costs.

The company admitted the offence before the Hertford magistrates.

Anthony Ostrin. prosecuting for Vosa, said Munawar Hussain Shah was driving the vehicle when it was checked at the roadside. Shah's driving licence showed he was not entitled to drive a vehicle of that class.

Mohammed Saghir, managing director of MS Foods, in interview and in a letter to the court said he thought that if Shah had passed the test in 1997 he could drive the vehicle on a category B licence. The trail ic examiner told him a Cl licence was required.

The company was fined E750 with11,000 costs.

Shah, of Wolverton, Milton Keynes, pleaded guilty to driving without the proper classification on his licence. He was fined £50 and ordered to pay costs of £200; his driving licence was endorsed with four penalty points.
