WE ARE keen to correct a number of misleading statements you have printed regarding the low-emission zone ('Vosa will be the 'victim' in LEZ confusion', CM 19 July).
It talks of "a Euro-2 and 3 PM value of 0.4mg/m3", which is an incorrect mix of standards and units as well as being quite mistaken. The particulate matter limit for Euro-2 is 0.15 g,/kWh, and for Euro-3 it is 0.1 g/kWh.Vosa measures smoke opacity in its diesel emission tests, which is something different, and, for the record, has units of m-1.
Mike Henning claims "most Euro-1 engines meet" this imagined standard. In fact, there are only four Euro-1 engines potentially able to meet the lowemission zone emissions standards, provided they pas.s the Vosa inspection and smoke test. Contrary to Mr Henning's statements there are no Euro-1 Mercedes or Daf engines able to meet low-emission zone emissions requirements, whatever their smoke opacity readings.
The list of Euro-2 engines, as well as four Euro-1 engines which are potentially eligible, is published on the Transport for London website. Operators can also contact the low-emission zone enquiry line on 0845 607 0009 for information.
Vehicles fitted with these engines will need to undergo an inspection and smoke test from Vosa to qualify for a Reduced Pollution Certificate or Low Emission Certificate.
