urging the Home Office to get tough on mobile phone use. The magistrates want to see offenders hit with a £60 fine and three penalty points.
Arthur Winnington, chairman of the association's road traffic committee, says that this would reflect the seriousness of the offence. He believes drivers would realise that it would just take a couple of additional speeding offences and "they would soon be off the road".
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has called for an absolute ban on mobile phone use while driving (CM12-18 July).
