• The so-called missing link of the M20, between Maidstone and Ashford, which is currently the subject of a public inquiry, should be built as a dual four-lane motorway, says the British Road Federation (BRF).
The BRF claims that traffic growth from the Channel Tunnel and the adjoining Maidstone By-pass section of the M20 will cause congestion problems unless a dual fourlane motorway is built.
Peter Witt, BRF director, says that "The Department of Transport has seriously underestimated future traffic flows on the motorway."
Current Department of Transport plans for the road are for a dual, three-lane motorway stretching 22.5km between Maidstone and Ashford, costing around £64 million.
The public inquiry, now taking place in Maidstone, was set up to consider the provision of interchanges along the proposed motorway section, and the alteration of nearby roads.
