Poole, of one of the big names in state-owned road transport in the Sixties — George Quick-Smith — at the age of 80.

For many years George Quick-Smith was the chief executive of the state-owned National Freight Corporation, under the chairmanship of Sir Reginald Wilson.

Called to the bar, Inner Temple, he served with British Road Services from its inception in 1948 until 1959, when he became adviser on special projects to the British Transport Commission. His appointment to the NFC commenced in 1962 and lasted until his retirement in 1971.

Three years later he became a member of the Transport Tribunal, a post which he relinquished in 1977.

A Master of the Carmen's Company — the famous City livery company — from 1967 to 1968, George Quick-Smith was made a CBE in 1959.
