The little car-derived van will be in direct competition with the Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 205 and Austin Metro 310.

Below: Unlike the larger Extra van, with its double rear doors, the new hatchback 5 van has a single lifting tailgate. Its load platform measures 1,297min. Maximum loading height is 928mm, while its interior width is 1,335mm. based on the Renault 5 in to Britain.

The new 1.14-tonne GVW hatchback van — already sold on the Continent as the Societe — has a nominal 400kg payload and a 1.1m3 load volume. This puts it in the same class as the Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 205 and Metro 310 vans.

Both petrol and diesel versions of the hatchback van are expected to be launched in time for the Motor Show in October. The petrol van will be powered by a four-cylinder 34kW(46hp) 1.1-litre engine with a four-speed gearbox — five-speed will be optional. The 41kW(55hp) 1.6-litre diesel van will be fitted with a five-speed gearbox as standard.

These power units are already used in the larger Extra vans (CM March 8).

While the Extra has a purpose-built cargo body, the smaller R5 van retains the basic hatchback body shell, but with the rear windows blanked in with steel panels and an extra floor section fitted across the rear seat footwell.

A metal load retaining barrier is standard, along with a load platform cover and four load-lashing points.

Although all Master, Trafic and Extra vans are now finished with the same grey/rainbow stripe interior trim, the latest hatchback van will keep the plaid seat coverings normally used in the car.

['Renault has now gained full Type Approval on its 4x4 Trafic (CM June 21) which is based on the latest T1300 long-wheelbase, high-roof van. Two-litre petrol and diesel versions will be launched in the UK before the Motor Show.
