Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The National Owner Drivers Association is looking for peace with RMC Readymix this week after its national strike ballot only returned a majority of four in favour of industrial action.

Union boss Mick Binns travelled up to Liverpool on Tuesday (24 January) to ask his 66 RMC Readymix northwestern members to go back to work after an eight-week strike in the region.

The dispute began on Monday 5 December when NODA members in the company's north-western region walked out in support of nine longserving owner-drivers whose contracts with RMC had been terminated without notice. The company says that the nine dismissed drivers have a long history of day-to-day conflict with the management.

Binns decided that the union could not take any form of concerted industrial action with such a small ballot majority. NODA will now meet RMC in an attempt to improve the compensation packages being offered to the sacked drivers.
