• Irvine-based Volvo Trucks (Great Britain) has won a SA million export order for its new M6 Highlander 4x4 military truck, which is currently being evaluated by the Ministry of Defence.
The Swedish Air Force has ordered 63 M6 aircraft tugs with deliveries to begin in the summer of 1990. Volvo says this is the first order for the Highlander, and there are prospects for further orders of up to 200 more vehicles. They will be built at Volvo's Irvine plant where it was designed and developed.
The Swedish Air Force has specified the four-tonne truck version, with Allison automatic transmission. Volvo is pitching for the MoD's £125 million four-tonne contract with a manual version of the M6.
Volvo claims to be the first of the three companies competing for the MoD order to win an export order for its contender. Managing director Bernt Brandtzaeg says: "We are keen to continue the development of the export potential for the Highlander range and this order is one of a number we are currently involved in discussions on, albeit at a very early stage."
