• Fast-growing West Midland haulier Renwicks Freight has bought four transport companies, boosting its fleet by more than 140 trucks. Two more acquisitions in the pipeline are likely to add another 50. The Willenhall-based company is also buying 63 new Renault G170 rigids and G290 tractive units, including the 2,000th G-range truck off the production line.
The latest acquisition is Glyn John Transport of Cardiff, which runs 37 tractive units, 62 trailers and four rigids. The others are: Clive Watson Transport of Stafford; R&W Febry of Avonmouth; and James Foley of Manchester.
Company secretary Philip Holmes says the acquisitions are part of a VI million expansion plan made in January last year and 23 million has been spent so far. Expected turnover for 1989 is 222 million, he says. Renwicks' fleet stands at 195 tractive units, 350 trailers, 119 rigids and 26 vans. The company is selling 20 trucks, mostly Scanias and Dafs four or more years old, to undertake "fleet standardisation and renewal". The four purchases are the latest in a substantial list of acquisitions.
The company has also recently bought firms in Stallingborough, Smalley, Reading, Manchester, Hixon and Cardiff. It has depots in Manchester, Exeter, Shepton Mallet, Southampton, Slough, Bootle and Frome.
Clive Watson Transport owns 23 trailers and 16 rigids. R&W Febry has 32 tractive units, 112 trailers, 19 rigids and four vans. Foley has 25 tractive units and two trailers.
Holmes says more acquisitions will be made next month. Renwicks was founded as a coal distributor more than 100 years ago and started in road haulage in the 1950s. As well as haulage, it offers dedicated distribution, contract hire and warehousing.
