James Duncan, chairman of the Transport Development Group, has been elected president of the Chartered Institute of Transport for the year beginning October 1, 1980. He has been a Fellow of the Institute since 1970.

Mr Duncan joined a warehousing and haulage subsidiary of the TDG in 1953, becoming a director of the Group in 1960. In 1970 he became chief executive and in 1975 was appointed chairman of the board. Mr Duncan will make his presidential address to the Institute in London on October 13, 1980.

Leyland Vehicles Ltd has named two new members of its sales and marketing team. They are Jay Hale and Richard Morley.

Mr Hale becomes Leyland Vehicles sales and marketing director for European operations, responsible for the sale of all Leyland lorries and buses throughout Europe, including Sherpa vans. He moves to LV from the Hestair Group where he was sales director of the farm equipment division_ Richard Morley takes up the post of managing director of the Benelux Truck and Bus Division at Leyland Vehicles. He will be based at Mechelen in Belgium and be responsible for lorry and bus sales, marketing and servicing in Belgium. Holland and Luxembourg.

He also assumes responsibility for Deutsche Leyland, LV's German parts and service activity. He was previously managing director of Leyland Nigeria and is an ex-Lotus Cars managing director.

York Truck Equipment has two new branch Managers, Ron Steel and Gordon Scott. Ron Steel rejoins the company after a Spell with rival trailer manufacturer, Trailor, to take over the Cannock branch. He succeeds Allan Meddings who has moved to the Corby head office as assistant to the managing director of York Truck Equipment.

Gordon Scott takes over at the Ipswich branch following the resignation of Peter Bright.

The research manager for the National Bus Company, Paul Browning, is to take up a new post as a consultant for the South African National Institute for Transport and Road Research. He will advise the NITRR on training and demonstration projects in the field of public transport research. Mr Browning had been NBC's research manager since 1973 and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Transport.

Coach company Excelsior Holidays of Bournemouth has appointed three new board members, the first time in the company's 60-year history that non-family members have joined the board of directors. The three are traffic manager Peter Downs, tours manager Len Clarke and company secretary David Jenkin. The new appointments follow the death last year of Mrs Marie Maitland, the widow of Excelsior's founder, Walter Maitland, vvho died in 1971.

David Evans has joined the A. S. Williams Group as executive director, responsible for the group's transport companies Cavendish Transport and Sahara Fuel Oils (NW). Mr Evans takes up this new position after many years with Tate and Lyles contract hire division, Silver Roadways Contracts, where he was sales and marketing manager.

The Central Tyre Company has promoted Alan Murray to the position of managing director. He succeeds Jack Earl, who recently moved to Pirelli as tyres sales director. MT Murray was previously managing director of Central Tyre's Southern Group.
