THE UK LAUNCH ofthe new Mitsubishi L300 light commercial vehicle is expected during the summer. This latest addition to the growing ranks of Japanese imports was seen in Europe for the first time at this week's Geneva Commercial Motor Show. The van version, suitable for a payload of 1070kg, and a chassis/cab model were on display in company with the recabbed Mitsubishi Canter.

Of compact dimensions — overall length is only 3.99m with width is 1.69m — the Mitsubishi L300 has a pressed steel box member chassis frame and is powered by a water-cooled ohc 1.6-litre engine of 48kW. A four-speed fully synchronised transmission is fitted, and brakes are disc at the front and drums at the rear.

Geneva also brought a surprise exhibit by another Japanese maker already well established in Europe. The Toyota 'Lite-Ace,' whose world premi6re was at the recent Tokyo Motor Show, is being marketed in Switzerland in three versions all of which will be available as optional high-roof models.

A 1.3-litre engine as already used in the Toyota Corolla car is the power unit of the new vehicle designed for a payload of 800kg.
