FORD has announced a pro. gramme for improving thE anti-corrosion treatment of its commerical vehicles.
The new electrocoat primer paint system is cathodic, meaning that the body or cab of the vehicle being treated is negatively charged while the primer in the immersion tank is positively charged and consequently attracted to the metal.
Previously, Ford used an anodic system in which the body or cab was positively charged.
The advantages of the new system are claimed to be that the primer deposit produced has alkaline properties and is therefore an inherently good corrosion inhibitor; the cathodic system has better "throwing power" and is able to deposit primer in difficult cavities; and edges are better protected because more primer is deposited.
Additionally, on Transit models, closed sections are now being wax-injected and wheel arches are receiving a pvc coating.
