stepframe tipper A HAULIER is getting an extra 4.6cum (6cuyd) from each of five tipping semi-trailers by using a stepframe chassis.
The tippers were built by bodybuilders E. M. Wilcox of Peterborough for Woodhouse Transport (Lancaster). Each tipping semi-trailer has an aluminium alloy body built on a Crane Fruehauf tandem-axle stepframe chassis.
With this unconventional use of a stepframe chassis the tipper volume is increased, raising the overall body height. This brings the capacity of the tipper to 39.8cum (52cuyd).
Each body is internally 9.1m (30ft) long and 2.3m (7ft 7ins) wide. The sides are 1.7m (5ft 6ins) high stepped to 1.98m (6ft 6ins) in order to create the extra capacity. Tipping gear is an Edbro SD18 single ram.
