Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : The Guild

In his letter (CM January 12) Mr Bill Jordan, assistant secretary, National Guild of Transport Managers, takes exception to my statement (CM December 29, Profit from learning), "if a strong, professional body of road transport managers were established . . . ". by stating that the Guild has fulfilled this exact role for the past four years. In making the comment in my article I was neither unaware nor forgetful of the existence of the Guild. I used the words, "strong, professional body" advisedly since I do not feel that the Guild is either strong, in the sense of having widespread infltlence in the field of transport education, nor as yet, professional. On the latter point, what has the Guild done to further road transport education and training and has it had any plans to establish new systems of management training? Exactly two years ago the then national secretary had a long talk with me about the work of the Guild and promised to send the Guild's overall training and educational plan (which as I understand it, was to include a new residential management college) in the next post, I am still waiting.

I am very much aware of the demands made by the Guild that there should be, a compulsory licensing of transport managers. Unfortunately, the Guild does not wish to take any part in a voluntary scheme of grading transport managers, which, with the present political climate being against compulsion, seems to me to be a fruitless line of approach. No one would be more delighted than I to hear that the Guild has launched many successful schemes of training and has ambitious future plans. Mr Jordan points out that as an academic I need my mind refreshing. Have I missed hearing about important work which the Guild has executed?
