Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A direct Aberdeen-London express bus service could be running this summer if an Aberdeen coach hirer's plans get the go-ahead from the Traffic Commissioners. Hoping to get the necessary permission is Mr Bill Chapman, Simpson Road, Bridge of Don, principal of Balgownie Coaches.

"I believe there is a need for a service like this," he explains. "A lot of folk asked us last summer if there was such a service. I believe people in the oil industry, students, Forces personnel and others would use the express service".

Mr Chapman would run a twice-weekly service — departing on Tuesday and Friday and returning on Saturday and Monday. He would use 44-seater buses, travelling via Perth, Stepps, Gretna Green, Carlisle, down M6 to Birmingham and then MI.

Return fare, he proposes, is £8, with Birmingham a setting down spot on the journey south and a pick-up point on the return trip.

Mr Chapman reckons the all-in journey, allowing for stops, would be about 15 hours.

A number of objections has already been lodged against the application — from bus companies in Scotland and England and British Rail.
