• Twice since the introduction of checks on overloaded foreign vehicles, a French haulier has been stopped at Southampton docks. On the first occasion his lorry weighed 56 tons. On the second, when it was loaded with sheet steel, it topped 65 tons — more than twice the 32 tons maximum gross weight allowed on British roads.
