LIGHTER -than the traditional armoured car the Shorland, a well-protected patrol vehicle from Short Bros. and Harland Ltd., Belfast, has had a good reception. About 10 a month are now being built.
The prototype, which appeared in 1964, was inspired by the Royal Ulster Constabulary but the design has attracted interest from both military and police authorities from many parts of the world, including Africa and Asia. The chassis chosen was the 109in. wheelbase LandRover military version with heavy duty axles and suspension. Principal requirements for the units were reasonable first cost and ease of maintenance, combined with a good cross-country performance and plating adequate for protection against small arms fire and light landmines.
The RUC, which has some specialized needs but does not require anything so costly or weighty as the armoured car proper, already has some Shorlands at its disposal.
