B.R.S. Dispute

From Our Industrial Correspondent

UNOFFICIAL strikes hit a small number of British Road Services workshops and depots this week. The strike, called by shop stewards, was over the claim for a 15 per cent. " lieu " bonus for 3,500 maintenance and engineering workers employed at 153 depots up and down the country. They want the bonus to be paid until the four unions who represent the men can successfully negotiate a special bonus scheme.

Mr. Fred Blake, London district organizer of the National Union of Vehicle Builders, explained: "The B.R.S. drivers have already had an 18 per cent. bonus award. Now our men want a similar bonus scheme."

From the other side a B.R.S. official said: "We still have the bonus scheme under consideration but we have not yet been able to agree to it."

Only four depots answered the strike call, but there is a real danger that it might be followed by stronger official action.

Leaders of the .four unions involved are expected to meet soon to consider the situation.

At least one of the unions is in favour of making the strike official.
