INTERVIEWS started this week with the

first of something like 180,000 people in 50,000 households selected at random throughout Greater London, as part of the world's largest-ever "origin and destination " survey of traffic. Interviews will be spread over the next 10 months.

The survey, undertaken on behalf of the Ministry of Transport and the London County Council, will cover the whole of Greater London.

Its object is to provide a scientific basis for planning London's roads.

Statistics about journeys made by a random sample of about 35,000 goods vehicles based in the area will be obtained by interviews with goods vehicle operators, beginning next month. Information about journeys starting outside the survey area will be obtained by roadside interviews with a sample of vehicles crossing its boundaries. Results obtained from both series of interviews will be checked by roadside interviews at the Thames crossings later in the year.

All the information obtained from the interviews will be treated as confidential.
