Scheduled Bridges in Staffordshire.

Speaking at a Wolverhampton meeting, 'convened by Stafford County Council and relating to the Bridges Clause of the Road and Rail Traffic Act, the county surveyor stated that the railway companies had scheduled bridges for restriction to 12 tons that were known quite recently to have carried loads of 86 tons and 60 tons.

Alderman Ballard, of Dudley, spoke strongly in favour of the local authorities protecting the interests of roadtransport operators and suggested that he was convinced that the present move was not a question of weak bridges, but of the elimination of competition. He urged the authorities, both county and local, to use every endeavour to put a stop to improper use by the railways of their powers under the Act.

The county surveyor expressed the opinion that priority in the matter of dealing with scheduled bridges should be regulated, as much as anything else, by the importance of the route on which the bridge was situated.
