Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

COUNCILLORS IN Suffolk say they are committed to providing lorry drivers with safe. secure parking facilities after acknowledging that available space is woefully inadequate.

Suffolk County Council (SCC) has produced a guide to lorry parks, but it admits that the 360 parking spaces offered in total by the six truckstops is many hundreds short of what is needed to keep HGVs off lay-bys and industrial estates every night.

It is in discussions with the Highways Agency to find a permanent solution to the emergency parking procedure Operation Stack, launched whenever Felixstowe Port is forced to close because of poor weather.

SCC councillor Guy McGregor says the council and the police are under pressure to find an alternative to stacking hundreds of lorries on the old A45 road at Levington.

Asked about the available parking space for lorries, McGregor admits: "It's pathetic."

He adds: "It's a security issue. The other issue is how we treat people. That [parking in lay-bys] is not civilised."

McGregor, who is also the county council's portfolio holder for highways, was speaking at a council-inspired event to raise the public and councillors' awareness of the lives of lorry drivers.
