A nsalor push into the used truck market is being mounted by Derek Jones Commercials, The Islip, Kettering, Northants-based Scania distributor has set up a used operation at its Bleak Hall, Milton Keynes branch, which opened last November.

A similar operation will open at the company's new site in Corby in six to seven weeks time—a former BRS depot is being taken over and refurbished—and used commercials are also on display at its head office. "They're easily visible from the Al 4 but we don't have that much space," says marketing director Karen Jones. However, there are no immediate plans to sell used vehicles at the Peterborough depot. "They take up a lot of room and we're already running a rental fleet from there," says Jones, "And Peterborough is a fairly competitive used market." The firm's stock comprises a mixture of ex-contract vehicles and part-exchanges: anything that isn't a Scania is usually traded out.

Derek Jones covers an area stretching from Stamford in the north to Aylesbury in the south; running west to Northampton (where it has a depot) and east as far as St Ives in Cambridgeshire. It runs a maintenance unit in Wellingborough for Kwik-Save, with a large bodybuilding, bodywork and paint shop in Thrapston.

Derek Jones' initiative coincides with the first anniversary of the launch of Scania's Approved Used Trucks sales scheme (see page 52). To meet the scheme's requirements a truck must be a Scania less than six years old with a full service history which is available through a Scania distributor. It must have been through a 68point inspection and a routine service: it will be sold with a minimum three-month driveline warranty and Max 24, Scania's rapid-repair breakdown promise.

Scania has also set up a computerised used truck location system called ScanSearch, which searches nationwide.
