Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A haulier's decision to hire a vehicle out on his own insurance to save money is costing his two-van business hundreds of pounds.

Mark O'Callaghan, owner of Northampton-based Midland Haulage, hired a Volkswagen 1.,T35 from Northampton's 1st Direct Vehicle Rentals before Christmas for six weeks. I lowever, O'Callaghan's driver turned the van over, destroying the roof.

The £6,000 cost of repairing the vehicle was covered by O'Callaghan's insurance—but O'Callaghan is not insured for the £150-a-week hire fee that 1st Direct still expects because of a two-month wait to get a replacement roof from Volkswagen's German factory.

1st Direct insists that the vehicle has to be returned to it fully repaired before the hire charges come to an end.

Now O'Callaghan is warning other hauliers to always use a vehicle hirer's insurers or, if taking out their own insurance, to cover themselves for every possible event.
