BY THE EDITOR

WHEN we organized the first one-day Fleet Management Conference last September, we were quite overwhelmed by the staggering response from operators and manufacturers alike. Over 500 delegates registered, including many of the top names in transport. At that time I promised that we would stage the Conference every year. So we shall. This year the Fleet Management Conference will be held in Scotland—at the Dunblane Hotel on Wednesday, November 17—during the week of the Scottish Motor Show. This year the theme of the Conference is—" Operational Efficiency ". Three papers will be presented and discussed: Sir Reginald Wilson, deputy chairman and managing director of the Transport Holding Company will give a paper on "Non-technical Efficiency in Road Transport "; Mr. E. B. H. Elsbury, president of the Institute of Road Transport Engineers, will present "Education and the Status of Road Transport Executives "; and Mr. Andrew Dunn, a director of the Tayforth Group and this year's Scottish Area chairman of the Road Haulage Association, will give " Costing and its Relationship to Rates Structures". In addition, a panel of specially invited guests will sit during the day to answer questions about vehicle design and maintenance. They are: Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, Northern Licensing Authority; Mr. A. Prentice, manager St. Cuthbert's Co-operative Association; Mr. J. E. Johnson, North-East Division Workshops Engineer, British Road Services; and Mr. G. Ibbitson, chief engineer (commercial vehicles) British Motor Corporation. I have saved almost to the end what is, to me, one of the nicest announcements of all. Wherever transport is discussed in Scotland one name springs immediately to mind—Mr. James Amos. It gives me great pleasure to be able to say that he is to be chairman of the Conference. Other speakers during the day will include: Mr. W. M. Little, chairman, Scottish Omnibuses Group; Mr. J. P. Young, Scottish District manager of British Road Services; Mr. E. R. L. Fitzpayne, general manager, Glasgow Corporation transport department. Need I say any more?

The fee for the entire Conference is a modest 3 gns. This includes coffee, cocktails, lunch (not wine at lunch), and tea. For approximately 58s. per person (payable to the hotel) overnight accommodation, including dinner, can be booked. Delegates who require overnight accommodation should indicate this on their Reservation Form; we will book the rooms. If sufficient people are staying, a Conference dinner will be arranged. Single rooms are extremely few at the Dunblane Hotel, so it will be necessary to ask delegates to share rooms wherever possible. ALAN HAVARD
