THE Western Licensing Authority has granted special A licences to the following:— B. Lyon, 4 Pend Orlieu. Bridgwater. Som.. two vehicles (5 tons 9 ewt.); Western Transport. Ltd.. Feeder Road. St. Philips. Bristol. two vehicles (7 EMIG 7 cwt.); P. C. Cobbledick, New Street, Torrington, Devon. one vehicle (2 tons 9 cwt.). and I. H. Wath, The Black Horst Inn. Warmley, near Bristol, one 'vehicle (2 tons 9 cwt.).
Reads of Peterborough, Ltd., Stone Lane, Peterborough, whose purchase of a transport unit was reported last week, are to resume their .pre-nationalization daily service between Peterborough and London for machinery and furniture. They tendered for 22 vehicles but secured only two 6-tonners—" and a bonny pair they are, too!" Mr. G. Read, managing director. told The Commercial Motor on Wednesday. They have tendered again for the other 20 vehicles.
Archbold (Freightage), Ltd., 88 Jack Lane, Leeds, 10, are to resume their .pre-nationalization long-distance services with the purchase reported on
page 214. Archbold (Storage), Ltd., Leeds, have bought a transport unit to be used for the distribution of goods stored in their warehouses or of those in other storage concerns.
Messrs. E. Nelson and Son, Arnside, Lanes (see last week), have bought a Bedford 5-tonner for general haulage throughout the country. They already have eight vehicles under B licences operating within 35 miles of Arnside.
Mr. J. Stewart. of Hull, whose fourth purchase of a unit is reported on page 214, has acquired four 6-tonners. He already has 12 vehicles.
3s. MORE FOR MUNICIPAL WORKERS
FOLLOWING the further 3s. a week increase which, as reported in The Commercial Motor last week, the bus companies are to pay to their employees from March 5, the National Joint Industrial Council for the road passenger transport industry have agreed to a similar advance for staffs of municipal undertakings. Some 77,000 workers are affected.
FIVE WEEKS' STRIKE ENDED
AFIVE-WEEKS' strike of more than 80 coach workers of the Western SALT. Co., Ltd.. Kilmarnock, ended on Tuesday. It began on February 16 when the men alleged that a shop steward had been victimized.
