Goodsand Hackney Vehicles Both Make Excellent Showing in Official Returns for December

WJE indicated in our issue for last V'Y week that the number of new motor vehicles registered for the first time in December last, at 39,183, was a material advance on the total for the same month of 1935, the actual increase being practically 8,000, both the goods and hackney-vehicle figures contributing towards this satisfactory result.

Analysing the returns, one finds that the increase in goods vehicles, from 6,037 to 7,565, was largely brought about by the advance in the number of petrol machines licensed, the total of 5,809 for December, 1935, rising to 7,199 a year later. There were increases in all categories up to 4-tonners, the most notable advances being in the not-exceeding 12-cwt. division, which rose from 1,319 to 1,632 vehicles, and 2-21-tonners, which improved from 1,580 to 1,967 machines.

Smaller increases, as follow, took place in the intervening classes, last year's totals being given in parentheses :-12-cwt. 1-ton, • 1,169 (973); 1-11-ton, 773 (540); 11-2-ton, 1,228 (1,051); 21-3-ton, 251 (180). The registrations of 3-4-tonners rose from 99 to 114, and, above this size of vehicle, only 65 machines were registered in December, 1036.

• Turning to goods oilers, we find that the chief registrations continue in the 3-4-ton '(36) and 4-5-ton (84) categories, although the 6-7-ton division (26) is not far behind, and the 5-6-tonner (12) continues to be fairly popular. There were 17 goods oilers not exceeding 21tons, as against only four a year ago. The aggregate of oil-engined goods vehicles was 134, whereas a year earlier it reached just a century.

The electric vehicle, once again, made marked headway, the 97 registrations in -December, 19361 contrasting with 55 in December, 1935.

Included in the goods-vehicle returns were 32 machines licensed for drawing trailers, as against nine in the previous year.

The total number of six-wheelers registered was 123, the propbrtion being 67 of the articulated type and 56 of

the rigid pattern. The previous yea: total of similar vehicles was 100, ma up of 45 of the articulated class and of the rigid type. Out of a total of eight-wheelers, 22 were 6-7-tonners.

In the section for agricultural va and lorries, 117 vehicles were recorde

against -65 in December, 1935. T number of tractors licensed was 2 almost equally divided betwe general-haulage and.agricultural type

Turning to the hackney-vehk returns, the continued progress of t oiler is an outstanding featui Actually, 315 machines of this ty were licensed in December, 1936, co] pared with 181 in December, 1935, t total being made up of the following: 26-32-seaters, 58; 32-40-seaters, • 4 40-48-seaters, 26: 48-56-seaters, 18 The total number of petrol hackne was 213, more than half being ta) cabs; the previous year's total was 18 At 28, the number of trolleybuses gistered was only a mild improveme on the figure for December, 1935 (2f

The aggregate returns for 1936 she that 81,006 goods vehicles and 8,0 hackney -vehicles were registered, cof pared with 67,881 and 6,879 respc tively in 1935.
