leasing • British. Road Services Ltd. has set up a research unit at Sheffield University. Headed by W. A. L. Swift, a lecturer in mechanical engineering, and Research Fellow, Michael Foxon, it will look into problems of the transport industry in matching safety standards to technical innovations.
An example of this problem—and first priority of the unit—is the question of load securement. Investigations will also be carried out into a number of projects including antiroll torsion bars, the movement of 40ft ISO containers and safety in cab design.
Mr. Walter Batstone, BRSL's executive director, engineering, sees the unit as helping in creating a feed-back of information that will assist the company in drawing up specifications for maufacturers. who already accept many of the National Freight Federation's specifications. • Professor W. Fisher Cassie, head of Civil Engineering Department, Newcastle University. will deliver the Henry Spurrier Memorial lecture to the Institute of Transport on January 12 at 5.15 for 5.45 p.m. in the Commonwealth Hall of the Royal Commonwealth Society. 16-20 Craven Street, London, WC2. Subject of the lecture will be "Roads in the British Economy" and the meeting is open to visitors without tickets.

It is being run by two subsidiaries of the Hanger Investment Group. A specialist vehicle leasing company, Hanger Vehicle Rentals, is co-operating with Hanger Engineering Ltd.. -which manufacturers municipal vehicles.
Local authorities using the sCheme, which will he known as Munilease. will have available a range of equipment manufactured by Hanger Engineering, including refuse collectors, tankers, towers, and hydraulic platforms, road sweepers, bulk waste carriers, tippers, trucks and vans.
No initial deposits are required under the Munilease scheme which will normally run for five years but may be extended to seven. Vehicle bodies will be covered by a one-year warranty and chassis will be covered by normal manufacturer's guarantee.
Munilease contracts may, however, be extended to allow a three years warranty on certain types of vehicle and can also cover temporary replacements of vehicles which are Out of service following road accidents,
