Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• When the Hy-Spill tipping semi-trailer —claimed to be Britain's biggest with a 65 cu.yd. capacity—was recently introduced by Telehoist Ltd., of Cheltenham, the model was closely studied by Biffa Ltd., of Gerrards Cross, bulk handlers who were then operating a fleet of 42 cu.yd. Telehoist bulk haulage vehicles. The Hy-Spill, taking advantage of the Construction and Use Regulations by reducing weight with a frameless trailer, offered a saving of over 17cwt of tare weight compared with conventional frame-type dump semi-trailers, with obvious economies in waste carriage.

Mr. D. G. Biffa, the managing director, approved orders for over 20 Hy-Spill articulated trailers. They are allocated to the GLC refuse transfer stations in west and north-west London, these stations being fed by street refuse collectors. The trailer is backed into a bay for loading and on completion a specially tailored cover is unrolled from the box fitted to the front panel; this cover is fixed into position along the length of the trailer to prevent spillage on the highway journey to the tipping site.

Some of the special features of the Hy-Spill are seen at the tipping point. Although a very large unit, it can, turn in relatively small spaces and, whereas a rigid body requires a hard standing for tipping, the Hy-Spill works successfully on tipping sites which have not been consolidated, with all wheels firmly on the ground throughout the tipping operation. It can tip while moving forward or when jack-knifed. Clean tipping is simplified by the construction of the body, which is 6in. wider at the tipping end.

The overall length of the Biffa Hy-Spill body ; is 32ft, the internal width at the front being 7ft, extending to 7ft 6in. at the discharging point, the depth of the body sides being 7ft 8 lin, The all-welded, fixed-sided steel body has a 65 cu.yd. capacity. The ram housing is located in the front of the body and designed so that the main lifting stresses are transferred to the floor section during the lifting operation.

Barn-type rear doors are fitted and supported by heavy-duty fabricated steel hinges and secured by two quick-release locking bars.

The body unit is mounted on the running gear and connected by hinge brackets to the sub-frame of the running gear unit at the rear end. A tubular reinforced stabilizing unit is fitted to pivot points mounted on the front edge of the sub-frame, and this unit is pivoted on two heavy-duty fabricated draft arms.

The three-in-line air braking system and the hydraulic feed pipes to the rams are located on brackets mounted on the upper fifth wheel plate. Three-speed Nu-gear landing gear is welded to the draft arm assembly, allowing the trailer to be uncoupled and parked quickly.
