• The South Western (Provincial) Joint Industrial Council of passenger service vehicle operators, under the chairmanship of Mr. Basil S. Williams, has negotiated a new wage rate for coach drivers to be implemented from March 1 1970. The new rate takes into account the shorter working week necessitated by the Transport Act 1968.

Coach drivers will receive the minimum of £16 for a 50-hour week: hours in excess of this will be paid at the rate of 7s 6d an hour. Coach drivers working on Sundays will have their pay made up to Hs 6d an hour.

Mr Williams told CM that this was an historic agreement in the industry and he hoped that it would facilitate the recruitment of new entrants and help to relieve the acute shortage of good coach drivers.
