• Faced with unacceptable expansion costs for its GO (Government of Ontario) rail transit system, the Ontario Government has decided to try using buses. According to reports in The Montreal Star, Premier Roberts has announced that demonstration projects will be under way by mid-1970.
The purpose of the projects is to see if a single fare system of "collector" minibuses, "feeder" express buses and rail transit can solve the problems of commuter transport in the greater metropolitan area of Toronto.
Premier Roberts stated that the Government would not become a bus operator itself. but would provide Gray Coach Lines, a wholly owned subisdiary of the Toronto Transit Commission (itself a public utility), with the necessary finance to buy the rolling stock and provide the station facilities required. Operating subsidies would also have to be provided, he thought.
