• As a result of discussions between representatives of Teesside fire brigade. Teesside police, the borough engineer and chemical manufacturers and haulage contractors, routes for tankers carrying inflammable or toxic materials have been agreed and from January 1 tanker drivers will use special routes keeping the loads from busy roads or congested areas.
A police spokesman estimates that there are 1.200 tanker movements in the area every day and although there had not been serious tanker accidents on Teesside the plan was a precautionary measure,
